I teach a multi-level (1st, 2nd & 3rd) classroom where I have my same students from first through third grade. We are in a public school option program that teaches children through the use of the Montessori Educational Philosophy of independent learning.
Because of our philosophy, my job as a teacher is more to guide the students to and through discoveries to which they happen upon on their own. Students use many hands-on materials to gain knowledge of topics we are studying. Although we do follow academic standards, we also follow the child. This means that when a child wants to learn about something, we do it! I have 540 school days with each child to reach them & their specific interests!
Lately, many of my students have been very interested in animals and where they are found in the world. With the discovery of the individual animals, came more questions like why they are in certain places, what people have to do with the animals in those locations and what it would be like to live there. Immediately, the Waseca Biome Materials came to mind. I knew that it is what we really need to understand the full view of the Biomes, the animals and people that live there and why each biome is special.
Your donation will ensure that my students (and future students) will be able to explore our world- from the smallest of animals to the interesting weather that comes with each location. During the 540 days I have with each of them, they will develop more understanding of what it is like to live throughout the world. It will also help them develop an understanding and respect for the differences in people in hopes for a more peaceful future!
