This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine never leaving your own little town? My students come from different countries, and do not recognize that other places exist. They are special needs students who require hands on activities. So when discussing places it is helpful to show them rather than tell them.
I teach a self-contained fourth grade class in an urban district.
They are language disabled with other disabilities . My students are economically and socially disadvantaged. Over 90% of our school receives a free or reduced lunch. These children are educationally at risk, with little materials at home to help support them. Many do not have access to technology or books. Their parents work several jobs, have no means of transportation, and many do not speak the English language. They are great parents and always support the teachers and school programs. I buy many supplies for the class, but am unable to purchase these maps and globe. Please help my wonderful students who are so eager to learn.
My Project
I am requesting maps of New Jersey, the United States and the World, as well as a globe. I am also asking for floor puzzles so that my students can use hands on activities to help reinforce map and globe skills. It is important that my students can read a map and follow directions. They come from different countries and have little knowledge of anywhere outside of their town. "Time for Kids" which is a weekly magazine will help motivate my kids to read, as it covers a wide range of real-world topics. They have a deficit in non-fiction reading, and this will help to improve their critical thinking skills in a fun way.
My project is important to my class as they are socially and economically disadvantaged, but appreciate everything we do for them.
Since they have learning deficits, hands on activities and visuals help to reinforce concepts. By exposing them to other places in the world we can help them dream, and better navigate their world.
