Motivating children to read is one of those agony-ecstasy tasks every parent and teacher faces sooner or later. When the desire to read is planted, nurtured, and grows-ecstasy; but when an appreciation of reading fails to take root-agony...for the parent, teacher and child.
Third grade is a pivotal year for students.
My students are beginning to show their love of reading and my goal for this year is for them to be totally immersed in great literature and engaged with exciting complex texts. Perhaps equally as important is motivating students to want to learn.
My Project
The resources that I have selected will help bridge the gap to the Common Core standards. Scholastic Storyworks was written to address the Common Core State Standards. This magazine will help students by providing complex reading texts and text dependent questions to ensure that students meet the Common Core Standards head on. The Flat Stanley Worldwide Adventure books will enrich our PYP unit that focuses on various cultures around the world. Students will be engaged in reading because they will each have a copy of the books. I've requested The Intrepid Canadian Expedition, The Amazing Mexican Secret, The Flying Chinese Wonders, The Australian Boomerang Bonanza, the US Capital Commotion, The Japanese Ninja Surprise, The African Safari Discovery, The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery, and a Reader's Theater book on world cultures. I've also asked for two Google Nexus tablets which will be used for students to make presentations, to access apps and programs, and as an e-reader
My students deserve this chance to enrich their education.
Funding this project will enable my students to have rich reading materials so they will be excited to come to school every day and learn.
