My Project
Help me give my students crafting supplies that will enable us to explore art forms from around the world. Black gel pens, protractors and a compass set will enable us to make mandalas from ancient India, and watercolors will help us make beautiful paper to practice origami designs from Japan. We'll use the blank canvas bags for fabric print making and the beads to do Arabic weaving and macrame. Finally, we'll use what we've learned to make Pacific prints and tribal designs. My students will love learning about world history and cultures by exploring different art forms.
Because our population is so diverse, students thrive when school is infused with hands-on projects.
As a public high school teacher in Hawaii, I can look out at the students in my classroom and see a dozen or more different races, languages, cultures and ethnicities represented. We are a Title I school, so many of our students live below the poverty line, and often, their parents struggle to make ends meet. As a history and art elective teacher, I love when artistic projects can help students explore the world and its cultures and at the same time, give students a means of self-expression. With a limited budget, I would never be able to do projects like these if it was not for the generosity of our donors.
