This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine a teacher sitting in a rocking chair excited to share a book with her class. She calls them to the back of the room where they have to sit on the cold floor. A new rug would serve two purposes, a place to listen and a place to move around and learn the continents.
We are a Title I school in Virginia with some at risk, needy students.
School is often their place of comfort and the only structured time in their day. They learn better when they are taught in different ways. The requested carpet would give them a place to sit and listen to stories, and be used to play continent games.
My Project
Learning the 7 continents and the 5 oceans are one of the hardest topics that we are tasked with teaching. Seven and eight year olds' have a hard time learning the names and locations of them, as well as the directions you would travel to reach each of our world's continents and oceans.
Kids will have fun learning on this magic carpet.
Instead of sitting at their desks looking at a piece of paper, students will be actively engaged moving from one continent to the next. Our thirty plus year old school could use a splash of educational color and this carpet will be used every hour of every day.
