My Students

My students are destined to repeat the mistakes of history if they're not educated about them first. My students are hungry for knowledge and yearn to learn about history, but with ancient, boring textbooks, it makes teaching this information a serious challenge.

My 5th grade class is an eclectic group of young adults.

Our classroom is full of first generation Americans speaking over ten separate languages. Our school has close to forty different languages and dialects of languages spoken. We are a Title I school in a large urban school district, struggling to stay afloat during a time where finances are scarce and sometimes unavailable.

My Project

Nonfiction is a genre that brings the past right in front of children's eyes, allowing them to relive thrilling adventures, murders, and presidential assassinations. Students are only capable of expanding their minds as far as the resources available allow them. Bringing a classroom set of Around the World in a Hundred Years: From Henry the Navigator to Magellan into our world will allow my children to experience what life was like for all of these explorers. Jean Fritz brings history to life in 10 true tales of 15th-century European explorers. From Bartholomew Diaz and Christopher Columbus to Juan Ponce de Leon and Vasco Nuez de Balboa, history was changed and stories of adventure were left behind for everyone to learn.

The descriptive chapters tell a riveting story.

The myriad details and jumping back and forth can make it feel like it's happening presently, rather than in the past. No one is better than Jean Fritz at making history interesting as well as comprehensible. He created a fast-paced narrative enriched and enlivened by fascinating stories and details of the sort that rarely appear in standard textbooks.
