My students are 6th graders who will be exploring the world with me next year each and every day as we study geography. Many of my students have not been outside of the Northeast and fewer still have traveled abroad. As a second-year teacher who is changing grade levels and content area, I am looking to find novel ways that will capture their interest and expand their world. Middle schoolers are great...they are at a point in their lives where they are trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in.
My Project
This year I am taking my students to all the regions of the earth. During 180 days they will get to explore the themes of geography as they travel from the Amazon to the Nile to Oceania. The content is so rich and exciting that 6 iPads will enhance their learning above and beyond the dimensions of a textbook as they will get to explore faraway places in 3-D on Google Earth. As I already have a Green Screen, this will enable my students to be digitally placed in the continents they are studying. During online research and investigation, they will become familiar with the lives of people who live far away but who are more like them than they know.
