Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our day starts off with a greeting from the teacher and our theme song of the year. "Are my explorers ready to embark upon today's journey?" I say to prep them for the day's goals. I do this to motivate my students about the task at hand and encourage them to endure so they can see the larger view.
My students are second graders in New York State with disabilities.
Many of them come from homes where resources, technology, and travel are limited. Despite their circumstances, they are eager to learn and when you get them motivated they grasp on to your words like a like bees to a flower. They like to use the computer and engage in hands-on activities that allow them to move around and make new discoveries. They can tell you who they are, their address or the games they like to play, however many of them are unfamiliar with the marvels within their own community, neighboring communities, and in the world around them.
Our school is a public school with limited resources and technology. Many of our students in poverty. However, we have dedicated teachers that keep their students in mind and think of ways to make learning exciting for them. We are an arts school with a focus on excellence and close to four hundred students to encourage, engage, enrich, and empower.
My Project
My students will use the materials to connect their learning throughout disciplines to the larger concepts of becoming lifelong learners and global citizens of the world with an understanding and respect for their culture and the culture of others. Simultaneously, they will be immersed in inquiry around geography which is apart of the standardized social studies content.
The Rug map will allow my students to explore geography in a kinesthetic way through movement and exploration and allow for a great social studies center space in the classroom, where they can sit and read and learn about content . My students will use the globe to explore the world's geography. The books will provide the literature needed to immerse my students in the cultural diversity of the world and help them build mapping skills. The software and games will allow students to use technology as an additional format for learning, geography, cultural diversity, and enhancing their literacy and math skills.
While my students may not really travel around the world yet, in the one hundred eighty days of this school year they will learn about both their own and the culture of others around the globe.
This project will help my students understand that they are a part of a larger society and help them to become compassionate and culturally sensitive global citizens. They will also develop map, geography, literacy, technology and math skills to aid them as they travel through their community and beyond.
