Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach three 8th-grade English Language Arts blocks in a high-poverty California school. Two of the three blocks are intervention classes; that means most of my students need extra attention to reach their personal and educational goals. They are terrific kids whose strengths are not always measured by standardized tests.
Readers are thinkers, and thinkers are readers. My students can be both, but they need practice to build their reading fluency and comprehension. In addition, many of them come to English as a second language and need to broaden their vocabulary.
They love beautiful picture-books, and the illustrations help them understand and remember what they have read. Picture-books have advanced vocabulary and universal themes, reinforced and enriched by all of that wonderful artwork.
