Area and Perimeter Project the Magnetic Way

Help me give my students hands-on magnetic blocks to learn area and perimeter which is a hard skill for third graders.

My Project

My third grade students are amazing kids and third grade is a huge leap in academics. Determining the area and perimeter is a standard in third grade that is a hard skill to learn and understand. My students must be able to decide if the problem is an area or perimeter problem first. Then they must solve it using their addition and multiplication facts.

The magnetic blocks will allow my students to physically make the shapes to have a better understanding of the problem.

To fully understand these two skills they first need to create the shape and these magnetic blocks will stick together so the shape will stay together. It is very frustrating when using manipulatives when they move easily. These blocks should take some of the frustration out of solving the problem since they won't move.
