Several autistic students that I serve are reluctant to take part in whole school activities. Although they want to be included, their sensitivity to sound levels prevent them from being fully immersed in a lot of programs and activities.
They are reluctant to eat in the cafeteria, to go outside for recess, to attend school assemblies, to participate in schoolwide literacy and math/science family nights and join their peers on school field trips.
Instead they eat in a quiet room with an adult, or remain behind in a space that they have identified as their comfort zone.
Inclusivity, increased self-esteem and emotional stability are the main focus of this goal. All students want the same opportunities. Providing them with simple devices such as noise cancelling headphones will allow these special students to feel empowered and give them a sense of being a part of the school family. Please consider partnering with me in accommodating the special needs of students who desire the opportunity to make lasting memories with their classmates.
