Are You Squid-ing Me?! A Gross (But Fun) Science Project
Help me give my students preserved squid specimens so we can complete a squid dissection as we learn about body systems.

My Project
Every year always starts the same, with a student eagerly asking, "Do we get to dissect something this year?!". And most years the answer is no, it's expensive and we don't have the budget for it. Last year however, our school received a grant allowing all 6th grade science classes to dissect squid during our human body systems unit. And let me tell you, it was THE most talked about science activity we did all year. This year, I hope to give my new students the same opportunity to learn basic dissection skills and gain a better understanding of how body systems work.
With your donation, my students will be able to dissect squid in small groups as a culmination of "Squid Week", a week-long series of lessons where we learn about squid and their body systems.
Throughout the week we will learn about squid adaptations, complete a jet-propulsion STEM challenge, and much more! At the end, after taking notes on squid anatomy, students will be able to dissect a squid and identify the different parts and systems.
It's experiences like these that help engage students in science and make science come alive. Best of all, this project will allow my students to act as scientists as they gain foundational skills that will help them succeed in high school and beyond.
