Help me give my students kits for making benches for our schoolyard. We will build and paint these benches with messages welcoming students back and to remember the time and people we lost to COVID-19.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from every corner of the world. My students are all English Language Learners (ELLs), and are a microcosm of Queens: they speak over a dozen languages and come from more than 20 countries. What unites us is a common pursuit of opportunity and community. This past year has hit us hard in so many ways. It made our strength - project-based collaboration - so difficult. Remote learning, social distancing, students juggling work and school to make ends meet: all conspired to keep us feel as distant as we were physically.
During the height of New York's infections in spring 2020, our school and their families were hit the hardest of any area in the country: Several staff and many students were infected.
We lost a staff member, and many students lost family to COVID-19. As the pandemic wanes, we all look forward to the day we will be together again.
My Project
When we finally return to some kind of normalcy - when students and staff can all be back in school - it will be critical to acknowledge the time we spent apart, and to build our community anew. These bench kits are one way students can work together to build something that will be enjoyed by everyone.
Building benches to outfit our schoolyard will help us commemorate the trauma our community has suffered and help to begin the healing process together.
Students will be able to simply build these bench kits, and will be able to design the messages they contain. I anticipate these benches will decorated with messages that honor the members of our community we lost during the pandemic, as well as messages of hope and perseverance.
Building these benches as a class activity will be a memory that unites our students. Having these benches throughout our schoolyard will also be an enduring resource where people can sit and make friends, remember our time apart, and be grateful that we can finally be back together.
