Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Access to information is what it is all about. A listening center will provide the students in my class that are reading below grade level another avenue to access the information they need in order to be successful in school.
My students are a diverse group of learners; each one as curious as the next.
Many students are reading below grade level and require an extra boost to get to grade level. The majority of students in my class are English language learners. One of the most powerful tools for learning how to read, is being read to you. Hearing the rhythm of spoken language is also a powerful tool to assist English language learners with language acquisition.
My Project
A portable listening center will provide children access to books that they may be interested in but not able to access. Students that may be struggling with reading and consequently turn off from it will have reading open up to them. In addition to struggling readers, English language learners will benefit tremendously from the additional support that a listening center will provide them.
Readers' workshop is a powerful time in my classroom where reading choice dominants the students' selections.
With the addition of a listening center, opportunities for learning and enjoyment will open up to students who may have been denied them before. Positive feelings about books and reading will replace potentially discouraging ones that may have started to creep into my struggling readers minds.
