Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The children in my 3rd grade class exhibit a natural curiosity about many things. Two things that stand out are my personal life and the world around them. While I can fill them in on details of my personal life (if I choose) I would love to have the ability to better inform them when it comes to their questions about the world around them.

Often, when they ask questions about their surrounding neighborhood, New York State and world geography I find that the tiny maps I have do not do their inquisitive minds justice. The question posed as the title for this piece is a question one of my students actually asked me and at that moment it dawned on me that the perfect addition to our classroom would be large, colorful, engaging maps that show World as well as United States geography.

With your help, I would love to surprise my class with these new maps that would be appealing to all my students, especially the visual learners, in my classroom. Every year my school holds a “Festival of Nations” where each class in the school chooses a different country to represent and researches all aspects of that country’s culture, geographical makeup, and way of life. These new maps would be a perfect way to get them excited for the project and motivate them to really understand their surroundings.

Social studies and geography has always been an interest of mine, and I want to inspire my students to love learning the way I was inspired by my own teachers. Your help will make it possible for my students to find that same love of learning.
