Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
John Muir School serves an urban minority community. The school is comprised of 63% Hispanic, 15 % African American, and 15 % White. Many of the students are living below the poverty level. This economic factor causes many families to limit their travel and museum expenses. Therefore, many of my students have never been taken to a museum before.
The goal of this project is to give my second grade bilingual class a chance to visit a historical landmark that is also a working farm. George Washington Patterson came west in 1849 to seek his fortune in the gold fields of California. Instead, he "struck gold" in the farm fields of Southern Alameda County.
A visit to Ardenwood Farms is a journey back to the time of a 19th-century country estate. The farm includes a beautiful mansion and elaborate Victorian Gardens. Furthermore, the historic farm exhibits agricultural practices from the 1870s to the present. Giving my second graders a chance to visit this historical farm will allow them to participate in many activities common to a turn-of-the-century farm.
This project is important because children need real world contexts to apply to their reading, writing, science, and social studies curriculum. Many times I find that children in this urban setting do not know that milk comes from a cow, or that bread is made from grain.
In addition, young children struggle to conceptualize the past. This field trip will help me to support student learning within the context of the real world.
Lastly, I want to share my love for history with my students. In California we have limited access to historical monuments. This experience will enliven my excitement for learning and my passion for teaching history. We are only requesting funds to pay for transportation.
