Architects in Natural Disasters!

Help me give my students supplies to create structures that can withstand a flood, a hurricane, or an earthquake for a new perspective on natural disasters!

My Project

The United States is home to several natural disasters, including hurricanes, floods, and even earthquakes. Our current curriculum allows our students to read about and even watch many of these disasters.

However, this project will provide them with a unique opportunity to feel and witness the devastation that these storms can bring, thereby enhancing their understanding of the curriculum.

With these materials, my students will fully engage in a hands-on project. They will research and choose a natural disaster and build a structure to withstand it. Using skills in engineering, research, and the scientific method, they will build structures and then have them tested in simulated weather conditions. This dynamic, experiential learning will allow them to see the difference in architecture around the country, such as why homes in California on a fault line are built to handle earthquakes, and homes located on Florida beaches stand tall to avoid hurricane floods!
