This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are bright, inquisitive, and love a challenge. I teach enrichment groups for gifted students throughout my day. Gifted students come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I teach some gifted students with reading disabilities as well as bilingual students still catching up on English skills. I also coach robotics teams of students with mixed abilities after school.
Students learn best when they can relate to what they are reading; these engaging science texts teach about archaeology and the scientific process in a way that my students can connect to and feed a sense of wonder about the world around them.
I'm requesting enough copies of two different archaeology books so that my students can read independently within small groups. My 2nd grade students have been especially curious this year about ancient cultures and the differences between legend and facts. I'm especially excited about the "The Street Beneath My Feet" book because it explores the how archaeology, recent history, and modern living are layered and overlap in both our modern cities and rural areas.
The other books I'm requesting will give my students a basic understanding of the field of archaeology.
Our robotics theme for next year will be archaeology and our students will need to choose a problem to solve within that topic. I'm hoping we can front-load some background knowledge about archaeology with our kids this year, so our robotics teams can hit the ground running next year.
In our rural district, most of the families work in agriculture. Over 80% of our school children are of Hispanic descent, and many of them are English Language Learners. Most students participate in the free lunch program.
