My Students
Our students LOVE water polo! We are 4, year-round swimming classes in Oakland, CA who are developing the basic skills necessary to play the game of water polo. Right now we use what we have - a few old rubber volleyballs - to practice ball handling skills. Our students deserve the real deal!
Our students are a diverse group in a public, inner city high school who are new to the sport of swimming.
They are happy, cheerful teenagers excited about something new, fun, and active. Each class has 52 students in it!Although the sport is physically taxing, they beg to play more. A group of students from the classes have even started a water polo club on their own since our district does not have a team. All of the other surrounding districts have water polo teams. We play during swimming class.
My Project
If we were to receive these 13 water polo balls, our students would really feel as if they were growing in the sport. If they had the correct tools for the job, it would invigorate their interests. They would be able to perform drills for ball-handling skills and shooting skills with smaller groups per ball, instead of 10 students per ball. They would be able to have more hands-on practice, not waiting in line for their turn. In this way, they would be more active , which in turn, I believe, has a direct impact on their ability to achieve academically. Their physical well-being would increase their success in all classes.
Physical Education is so important with the rising numbers of health-related problems, too much TV and video games, violence and depression.
Being active helps ones self-esteem, focus, and ultimately, their success in all other classes. I believe that we need to encourage children to be more active, find something they love for a lifelong physical activity. Many of my students are finding a love for water polo. It is an exciting, vigorous team sport. Please help our sport stay strong!
