This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a buzz of activity, focused on giving kids the opportunities that they may not get elsewhere. My 3rd-grade class is in a high-need, low-income public school, nestled in the heart of southern California. Each of the students in my class is a vibrant, excited learner who looks for the next opportunity to gain knowledge.

Each child in my classroom is a unique learner who comes to school each day ready to achieve at the highest levels.

As a teacher, it is my job to make sure the students have access to the materials they need, at all times, as well as use those materials in a way that will facilitate higher learning and achievement.

My Project

When I ask my students what they would like to explore through our science units, they always mention gardening and growing our own food. This pairs so well with our life science unit, that it is only natural that they ask about it. So when I asked them how we might accomplish this task of gardening in our classroom, the students set out to research various indoor gardening methods.

Through their research, the students found aquaponics, and they were instantly hooked on the idea of making our classroom a place where food could be cultivated, grown, and eaten.

The Aquaponics aquarium that we have requested will help the students (and myself) ease into the idea of indoor gardening that they are so intrigued by. The students will be able to grow their own food in our classroom, connecting science and real life all in one. STEM will meet health education as they learn how to garden within the walls of our classroom. Their own inquiry and inspiration will actually materialize in front of them in a very meaningful and hands-on way.
