My Students
My school is located in Fort Wingate, NM, near an old Army base from the early 1900s. Our school is 100% minority, with all students being Native American. Many of my students come from low-income households. My high school students are very curious about science and the air we breathe outside. They love hands-on science and enjoy going outdoors to see science in the "real world." My students would immensely benefit from monitoring air quality near our school. We are interested in seeing air pollution in our area.
My Project
My students will use the Personal Air Monitor (PAM) for three weeks to measure air pollution inside and outside our school. This will allow my students to gain a deeper understanding of the pollutants in our air, including local sources of air pollution. We will share our air pollution data with other schools online at aqtreks.com. My students will measure particulate matter, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, temperature, pressure and humidity. They will be able to design Treks to investigate where these pollutants are high and low inside and outside the school. They will analyze their data online and compare their levels to levels found at other schools.
