Help me give my students earn items such as sequin fanny packs, mini basketball hoops, footballs, fidget spinners and other cool items for displaying positive behavior.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a special education teacher in a low-income and high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences while they are at school. My ultimate goal as a teacher is to always see the best in each and every student and allow them to reach their full potential with the necessary tools at hand. I am an educator and I am here to help my students remain inquisitive and expand their knowledge as they develop into an internationally minded scholar.
My Project
"You can't teach children to behave better by making them feel worse. When children feel better they behave better!" The primary purpose of school-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm. "With a caring culture of trust and collaboration, every student will graduate ready for college and career," that is APS's mission. As a special education lead teacher, School Climate Chairperson and PBIS Coach, I am holding myself accountable to ensure our students are given the necessary tools to accomplish our mission. The items we are requesting are earbuds, footballs, basketball and other cool tangible items that will be available for student to purchase with their deerbucks for displaying positive behavior throughout the school day. Our PBIS store is open once a month and students have the opportunity to shop for making positive choices.
The primary goal for this project is to "Affect Change School Wide!" With the implementation of the PBIS school store and Deerbucks we are utilizing proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments.
All students from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade have experience the PBIS store and Deerbucks and we have seen an increase in positive behavior school wide by earning Deerbuck to shop for items such as sequin fanny packs, glow in the dark slime, basketballs, footballs and an array of cool tangible items. In addition to addressing, behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding.
