Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We Believe, All Achieve! This is our school motto. The staff and students at my school say this mantra everyday and we believe it and live it not just for the students but for staff, too. I am the Media Specialist at a wonderful school for third, fourth, and fifth grade students in Montgomery County, Maryland. This is truly a neighborhood school. It is also an Elementary Home School Model. Most of the students come from the neighborhood and many walk to school. The school is very involved with the community and with the neighbors.
Our school is also a Title I school.
The population is 66% Hispanic, 17% Black, 9% White and 5% Asian. We have a 34% ESOL population. Often the students come from a different country right into our school environment where they are welcomed by staff, including ESOL teachers and specialists. 80% of our students qualify for Free And Reduced Meals (FARMS). We have a 12% Special Education (SPED) population. Our school houses three Highly-Gifted classrooms. Two are for 4th grades and one is for the 5th grade.
My Project
Hello. April is National Poetry Month. We like to celebrate this in the media center with books by Shel Silverstein, reading haiku poems and writing acrostic poems. It is a great way to connect with words and the written language as well as allowing students to create poems of their own. It would be so great to have each student carry a poem in their pocket which they have created. We just need a few resources to make this happen. Mostly, construction paper, markers and books about poems so that I can read to the students during their media time.
More than half of students from low‑income households
