This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are experts in downloading and using Apps; however, most of my students do not have experience creating Apps. I would like to give my students the ability to become technology innovators by learning to create their own Apps through MIT App Inventor.
My students are bright, energetic, creative, inspiring middle school students.
They represent a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. Some of my students have recently joined our community from other countries and do not speak English in their homes with their families. Some of these students are learning to speak English for the first time in their lives as middle school students.
Over 70% of my students receive free or reduced lunch based on their family's income level. However, based on the struggles that many of the students face at home, they know that they are completely supported by their family at school. The teachers, staff, and administration work together with the students, their families, and the members of the community to continuously improve the students' lives.
With all of our diversity, my students and I love to learn from each other and are motivated to achieve as much as we can during our limited time together.
My Project
Inspired by the Technovation Challenge and the MIT App Inventor, I would like to assist my students in working together to imagine, design, and develop mobile apps, then create a pitch for their startup business.
My students and I will follow the curriculum developed for the Technovation Challenge which will guide us through a series of 12 lessons where students will become technology entrepreneurs and put together a mobile app startup company. Students will develop a business idea, test and iterate on their idea, write a business plan, design and develop their mobile app prototype, and pitch their business in class.
The Samsung Note that I have requested, through this grant, will give my students an opportunity to try out their new apps.
According to "Using the Technology of Today, in the Classroom Today," an Education Arcade paper, my students have been developed in the digital wave.
Digital technologies are a fully integrated aspect of their lives. Students are using new media and technologies to create new things in new ways, learn new things in new ways, and communicate in new ways with new people.
I want to tap into this digital wiring with this project and get my students excited about becoming creators of technology.
