Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of teaching a diverse group of 7th grade students that attend a Title I public junior high school. Although many students may come from different socioeconomic situations, they are motivated to make a better life for themselves and family.
High expectations are the norm in my classroom and the kids know it.I work hard to create engaging lessons for my kids, so they can become critical thinkers. Although it takes a lot of work, on their part they rise!
Being a middle school student can be tough. Many kids struggle with feeling connected at school, with their classmates, and their friends. The Appreciation Station, is one way to help promote community and link kids to one another. Small groups of students will work together to plan and organize this monthly school wide event. They will learn how advertise the event to the student body (over 1,200 students) via posters, video & online advertisements. They will figure out how to anticipate potential issues such low supplies, lack of participants or a poor table set up. They will also mange the tables where the student body will get a chance to write notes of appreciation and/or recognition using the colorful card stock paper and markers requested to friends, classmates, and school staff. They will learn how to work as a team managing this area, and trouble shoot if supplies run low or a high volume of students want to participate.
In Their Own Words
"I think sometimes kids need to be nice to each other. If we can write a note to a friend, that might make them feel happy. Because it's hard saying how you feel, sometimes it's easier to write it down. " -Janee
"I know when I feel bad my friends try to cheer me up. What if some kids don't have a lot of friends? Then they might feel sad at school." -Jazmine
"I want to help out at the school, but am kinda shy. If I get to help planning how we do the Appreciation Station I think I'll feel more comfortable talking to other people." -Christine
"I really like working in groups cause it's cool hearing other people's ideas"-Diego
" I think we will be able to work together to make this event a cool thing at my school. It's like on my soccer team, we have to work together to score a goal."-Miguel
"Right now there's a lot of stuff happening that makes kids nervous to come to school. I think if we start this event kids will feel more comfortable and calm."- Lynee
"I like that Appreciation Station is a way write a little note saying thanks or you're a good friend. Cause when I write notes in class my teachers always take them away. If I get to do this at the event, then they won't get taken away!" -Alicia
