This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What do snacks, tools, pounds of salt, and bolts of fabric all have in common? Why they are all items an art teacher needs to effectively do their job and support their students- silly!

Being an Art Teacher presents a myriad of material needs that do not come standard in an everyday classroom.

The focus of this project is to acquire materials that will help me with the end of the year art exhibits, fiber art final projects and afterschool tutoring.

How? I'll break it down for you.. read on!

Snacks are not something you can buy with school funds, because they do not qualify as "instructional materials". Understandable- but frustrating because when I offer an incentive for failing students to come in for afterschool tutoring or if I want to sweeten (pun intended) the prize for a winning team in a classroom challenge-and I offer a bag of cookies or chips- teenagers are THERE FOR IT! And normally, that is when I will spend my own money, because a little goes a long way.

Salt- NO! This is NOT for them eat! In my Fiber Arts class we dye fabric and adding salt to the dye bath is an important ingredient. Regular school supplies do not include non-iodized salt. Nor do they have bolts of fabric for them to dye and make art with.

Lastly, the tools. I have over 200 students whose art goes up on display; sometimes formally in a school exhibition and often in the classroom. These tools will allow me to have my own set of pliers, screwdriver and blades to help me prepare and hang these masterful artworks for the whole school to see! And if funded, I will sweeten this pot by sharing images of their art exhibition for you to see too!
