Our first grade team has been centering our year around the PBL concept of community. We started out learning about our local town and our diverse community history. During second semester we expanded our learning to our greater island community and the surrounding ocean.
I would like to continue our community learning by highlighting how students can make small changes that have a big impact on our community and environment.
We will start out by reading The Lorax in class and having each student bring a copy home to share with their families. Each student will then brainstorm ways they can make daily changes to protect and conserve our natural resource. Students will then decorate a small reusable stainless steel container, a bamboo spork and a handkerchief. We will decorate these things with environmental stickers and paint pens. We will print on the handkerchiefs and have students use these as reusable napkins.
Hopefully by engaging the students in the process of brainstorming, decorating and involving their families these tools will make it into their everyday lives.
My hope is that the families will utilize the containers, utensils and napkins to replace the single use plastics that are often seen in their snacks and lunches.
