Appreciating History through the Graphic Novel, They Called Us Enemy

Help me give my students the ability to love and appreciate history through visual materials such as "They Called Us Enemy" that encourage a sense of critical thinking and imagination.

My Students

Teaching History comes with a unique set of challenges; students from all backgrounds come together to analyze and interpret a shared past from their own cultural perspectives. While this can present difficulties, it is also an enlightening experience for my students when we participate in topical discussions. I love that students in my classes feel comfortable acknowledging the rights and wrongs of the past; as a result, these students feel as if they have an informed voice when confronting current injustices.

In my years of being an educator, I've noticed more and more that my students are starving for stimulating visual materials that bring the history I teach to life.

I was shocked by the amount of enthusiasm my students developed for a graphic novel I introduced regarding women in the Middle East. Seeing how much my students enjoyed this activity, I'd love to continue this trend.

My Project

During the completion of my postgraduate degree, I was asked to analyze my first history-related graphic novel called "Abina and the Important Men" by Trevor R. Getz and Liz Clarke. I was initially skeptical about the effectiveness of learning content in this way; however, I was absolutely amazed at how much of the historical content I absorbed! I felt so emotionally attached to the characters and the story that I couldn't put the material down until I had finished it.

What entices students about graphic novels is that they're incredibly easy to read, while providing historical content in an exciting way.

With George Takei's "They Called Us Enemy," I plan to teach students about the questionable decisions made during World War II that subjected Japanese Americans to internment camps. While I aim to focus on selections of this story for my 9th grade American History classes, I would like to analyze the entire graphic novel in my upper-level World War II semester courses.
