Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each year I teach my students about "Ohana" = family, where we make sure to include everyone and not allow anyone to feel left out. Our class is our daytime family, and we must learn to take care of our school family.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on my students this year by isolating them away from their friends and teachers.

In addition to the quarantine, the students have watched protests and violence about racism and inequalities on the news and within their communities which have increased their doubt and fear of their own safety.

My Project

I'd like to read these new culturally relevant books aloud to my students because current events have shown so many stories about racism and inequalities. I want to use these read aloud books to teach my students that although people are similar in many ways, they are often treated differently because of their different ethnicities.

As I read aloud these new culturally relevant books to my students while they are quarantined at home, I want my students to develop an appreciation and acceptance of the diverse ethnicities that surround them in our school, our community, and our world.

These books also portray a variety of family-types such as single parent and grandparent guardians. I hope to develop their sense of self-identity as they may see a family-type or heritage similar to their own and realize although we are all different, we are also the same in many ways. I want them to be able to accept and appreciate everyone's differences because that's what makes our society so special.
