This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have a group of students that are forming a team to accomplish a task set for them in the VEX Robotics Competition Season "Over Under". I have been teaching these students for a year and they are an outgoing motivated group of young people. My students have come up with a few ideas to create prototypes to interact with the elements in the game. The students must make the robot pick up acorn shaped objects and place them. However, the most challenging task is that the students must design a robot that can climb a vertical 2-inch PVC pipe. They plan to use the gears to create a mechanical advantage that can overcome the weight of the robot. The supplies requested will help them to fulfill the materials list and begin to create and test their ideas. Specifically, we are in need of metal parts from VEX Robotics to help fabricate the prototypes the students come up with. The need for this resource is crucial because the students are only allowed to use VEX components for their solution. The students have also asked for an inertial sensor to help the programmer location the robots position on the field and guide it to the objects in the game. We also need the tools to help fasten the parts together. This requires special screwdrivers called torx drivers along with wrenches to hold the nuts in place. This project will help me to provide my students a real-life example of engineering and teamwork. In my community an experience like this would otherwise be unattainable for the students to access.
