Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am excited to introduce an innovative project that combines math, creativity, and hands-on learning for my students. I am seeking support to bring a build-your-own guitar kit into my math classroom. This project will allow students to apply mathematical concepts in a fun, practical way while fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Building a guitar involves understanding and applying key math concepts such as measurement, geometry, fractions, ratios, and angles.
As students assemble the guitar, they will calculate dimensions, adjust string tensions, and analyze sound wave frequencies—turning abstract mathematical ideas into real-world applications. This hands-on project will not only reinforce their understanding of math but also show them how math connects to music and engineering.
Additionally, this project promotes teamwork and collaboration. Students will work together to construct the guitar, troubleshoot challenges, and apply precision and problem-solving techniques. They will also gain a sense of accomplishment by creating a functional musical instrument that can be used by our school’s music program or rock band.
For many of my students, especially those who thrive in hands-on learning environments, this project will provide a unique opportunity to engage with math in a way that feels meaningful and relevant. It will spark creativity, encourage persistence, and build confidence in their abilities.
