My Students

I serve a fun group of seventh grade scholars in a Title I school near downtown Charlotte. Most of my scholars I teach come from low-income households and over 90% receive free or reduced rate lunch. They receive government assistance and some are even homeless. They are lacking the most basic school supplies like paper and pencil. As teachers, we often provide these materials. Many times they pay for these out of their own pockets. These students come to school escaping circumstances many of us could never imagine dealing with as an adult. For many of them, school is a place of solace, a time of peace in a world of chaos.

My Project

We're approaching the end of another school year. This means my favorite unit it upon us: life science. Through the funding of an Apple watch for my classroom, along with the use of the 1-to-1 Apple iPads so graciously provide through a grant from Verizon, my students will be able to participate in experiments that can monitor their heart rates. They can immediately transfer this data to their iPads to collaborate, analyze, and compare.

With the funding of this project, not only will my students be able to access new technology, they will also be able use it in a more meaningful way within my classroom in applications that directly connect to our life science curriculum.

I try to make learning in my classroom as relevant as possible. This is often difficult without the right materials. The funding of this project would help me continue to keep my teaching relevant using an engaging, hands-on approach.
