My students need a new Apple iPad Air 2 to replace the iPad 2s, donated 4 years ago by the local Lions Clubs, and will become obsolete within the next few iOS upgrades.

My Students

I am an itinerant vision teacher, meaning I work with visually impaired and blind children in several small rural towns in multiple counties in central Illinois. My students range from pre-Kindergarten to high school. I am usually functioning on limited resources and equipment.

I have the privilege to work with an awesome group of children, all with different visual impairments, a few with multiple impairments.

They are in small, rural towns and usually are the only visually impaired child in their school. The children range from ages four to seventeen. Most all are mainstreamed into regular classrooms and are on track to continue on to college or vocational school after graduation.

My Project

Traditionally, to function with their sighted peers in the General Education classrooms, my students required bulky, multiple volume large print editions of the classroom textbooks, enlarged paper handouts, special audio book players, costly screen reading software, and special equipment to see classroom smart/chalkboards. Many of the visually impaired students were shunned or were embarrassed to be seen using as they were the only ones using such accommodations, and felt made them standout and appear different from their fully sighted classroom peers. In the twenty-seven years of teaching individuals with low vision, Apple iPads have changed my job and students' lives in a positive way. When developing the iPad, Apple consulted with individuals who were blind and low-vision, building into their device many of the featured that replace the bulky, specialized technology and devices that once segregated and drew attention to my students.

Originally, I obtain four iPad2s for my students through the local Lions Clubs.

But I was told it was a one shot deal, and soon these tablets will become obsolete. Your donations will help me to begin updating to the newer iPad Air 2 allowing my students to continue to be competitive in the regular education classrooms, while meeting their visual accommodation needs on a device that they feel bonds them with their sighted classmates, rather than highlight their impairment and differences.
