My Project
My students live in urban centers, the vast majority have never experienced the taste of apple cider. It's even more unlikely that they have ever made apple cider and even harder to imagine them knowingly pasteurizing anything. I'm hoping to correct that with this project.
With this juicer, we will be able to collect wild apples that grow on our school campus, as well as leftover apples from school lunches, and press them into apple cider.
We will then apply science and STEM principles to learn about and apply pasteurization to ensure better health practices.
The goal of this project is for our urban students to take ownership and create their own experience of making cider to better connect to prior cultures and appreciate the STEM connections of prior New Englanders. Students will then learn about pasteurization and, of course, can sample their hard work by tasting the apple cider.
