Appealing to the Senses and Sensibilities of Students

My students need color printer ink, an aromatheraphy diffuser, a hand puppet set, hairdresser dramatic play kits, etch-a-sketches, and laminator pouches.

My Students

My students are a special, charming group of kids who teach me as much as I teach them.

All of my students are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders and all of my students are amazing, dynamic learners.

Some like to learn in small groups, some learn 1-1, while others need their lessons embedded into fun, meaningful play activities. We rotate through five different language based stations a day, where IEP goals are woven into the fabric on standards based instruction.

My Project

After the first week of school, I learned enough about my students to start tailoring the environment to them.

Students with autism connect with the world by using all of their senses: by touching, tasting, smelling, seeing, and hearing.

Etch-A-Sketches, a hairdresser dramatic play kit, an aromatherapy diffuser and a hand puppet set will unlock social language for my students. I noticed that one little guy loved staging plays using tattered puppets. Another kiddo delighted in making play dough from scratch using essential oils.

Recently, I discovered a veteran student of mine loves pretending to cut hair. After connecting with students, I want to have things in the classroom that they love and need to help engage them in new learning and to push their language acquisition.

Color ink and laminator pouches will help make extension activities vibrant and durable, so kids retain what they've gained.
