Our school is a racially and culturally diverse school serving over seven hundred students in St. Paul, MN. Many of our students receive special services.
70% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Almost 30% of our students are English Language Learners and about 10% of students receive Special Education services.
We are comprised of two separate schools with different programs: Montessori and Science. Students have many hands-on opportunities for learning through the Inquiry Zone, a hydroponics lab, an iPad initiative, and outdoor gardening areas. Our students are active, inquisitive children desperately in need of resources due to multiple years of school district budget cuts.
My Project
My students constantly ask for pop-up books to read in our library. I am rarely able to purchase them because they are so expensive and so delicate. They are such a huge motivator for students though, that I want to create a special station in the library where they can explore pop-up books.
These books will be available to all 750+ students in our school from PreK-5th grade.
Pop-ups are a great tool to get reluctant readers interested in picking up a book. They are also wonderful options for students who need a more interactive book experience. Touching the images gives students the feeling that they’re inside the story, which makes it all the more engaging. The illustrations immediately grab a student's attention because the pictures virtually explode right off the page. They are a great way to add some extra incentive and rewards to reading, especially for kids who get bored easily. Students will want to come back to the books over and over again, strengthening vocabulary skills through rereading.
Students will also benefit from the artistic aspect of the pop-up books. They can learn the process for how to write and create their own stories. Struggling readers can use the rich visual clues to interpret text that may be challenging. Best of all the books will encourage a love of reading which is a huge factor in getting students to read outside of school.
