My Students
These students love learning about AP Environmental Science. Twenty-eight AP Environmental Science students traveled to Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and Key Largo to study the ecology of South Florida.
Students kayaked Nine Mile Pond, hiked through knee-deep waters in a cypress dome, and identified plants and animals in eight distinct ecosystems.
Some students learned about animal behavior while swimming with bottlenose dolphins, and others determined what invasive fish eat by dissecting ranger caught Lionfish. The group observed diversity at a coral reef called Grecian Rocks. The barracuda seemed extra large this year. The trip ended with a shark tagging expedition with Nova Southeastern University. Students caught and collected data on a Sandbar shark and a Hammerhead. The collected data will be used to learn more about shark ecology, and to develop strategies for protection of shark populations. “It was amazing to step out of my comfort zone with amazing people. This trip to the Everglades is an experience I will cherish forever,” Senior.
My Project
My students will use the Personal Air Monitor (PAM) for three weeks to measure air pollution inside and outside our school. This will allow my students to gain a deeper understanding of the pollutants in our air, including local sources of air pollution. We will share our air pollution data with other schools online at aqtreks.com. My students will measure particulate matter, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, temperature, pressure, and humidity. They will be able to design Treks to investigate where these pollutants are high and low inside and outside the school. They will analyze their data online and compare their levels to levels found at other schools.
