About My Students

I teach a group of wonderful 11th graders residing in an urban community in the northeastern part of the country. Many of my students are not on grade level in reading or math. Many of my students are of low socioeconomic status and many of their parents have just a high school diploma. Although many of my students deal with adverse conditions outside of school, they have hope of a better future. It's up to us to provide that exposure to help make their future a reality!

My students who will be participating in this project are enrolled in my AP U.S. History course. Many of my students are enrolled in our law academy and its mission is to offer a comprehensive program of specialized training, including internships, job shadowing, and college tours, so that, upon graduation, our civic-minded scholars will be prepare for skilled entry-level jobs/entrance into post-secondary institutions. In order for this to take place, my students must have better test-taking and critical thinking skills. This project aims to enhance our already comprehensive academy programming so that these student leaders will learn resourcefulness as they use the test prep software to enhance their current abilities to manifest into future success!

In Their Own Words

The goal we have in mind for this project is really simple. We want to use the AP (advanced placement) U.S. History test taking preparation software to increase our AP scores. Many of us shut down when it comes to testing and get frustrated easily. By using this software, we can learn strategies to keep us form doing that as well as help us improve our knowledge and preparedness for the exam.

As participants in the law academy, and members of the AP U.S. History class, we are already leaders. We believe this will improve our leadership abilities because other students will see us working on our test-taking skills and talking about how the software is helping us, thus making us step up even more as leaders. The only difference is that we will have more knowledgeable leadership.

This project is very important to my classmates and our school community because we would not have access to an AP test preparation program without your assistance. The majority of our classmates can't afford it but we so desperately need it. What's more, our AP program at my school really needs to improve our scores. We want to be among the haves and exposure to this software will help us on the right pathway.
