A.P. United States Government and Politics Book Project

Help me give my students a selection of books that will both deepen their understanding of our political system, and foster a love for reading.

My Project

After completing our AP U.S. Government curriculum, culminating in a difficult national exam, I like to close out the school year with a book study. This project gives the students an ability to use their understanding of U.S. politics when reading complex text, and allows students to further their understanding through topics that are specifically interesting to them. This year, I have more students than ever taking my AP Government class. My previous "Donors Choose" projects have been fulfilled through generous donors, but I find that the number of books that I need has increased with my added enrollment.

I believe an effective education in civics not only provides an understanding of our governmental framework, but, leaves students with a passion to be active participants in our democracy.

In the last projects I have funded on DonorsChoose I selected books that asked the question "now what?" which discussed avenues for active participation and growing the democratic impact, and also a selection of personal memoirs, biographies, and autobiographies. In my most recent project I added some titles that center around the Supreme Court.

For this project I wanted to find some titles that deal with current policy and social issues. This includes books covering civil rights and other social movements, to foreign policy concerns in the modern world. As always, my goal is to continue building my classroom library so that each student can find a book that speaks to their interests. Not only will this further their content understanding, but also build their love for reading.
