Ms. Halter from San Francisco CA is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need their own copies of the books we will be analyzing in class this year so that they can mark up the text, capture their brilliant ideas, and truly engage with the work.
My students are SENIORS this year, and I can hardly believe they will graduate in May 2019. I had the amazing fortune of teaching them last year as juniors. Persistent, thoughtful, and joyful, they grew tremendously in mere months. We became a family last year in our AP Language and Composition class - as evidenced by our family photo where we're rocking our AP shirts - and I cannot wait to teach them again this year as seniors in AP Literature.
My students are over-achievers.
Many of the students in my AP English Literature and Composition course are enrolled in at least two other AP courses this year! Beyond balancing AP coursework, they will all be applying for college, and as many of my students are first generation, this is no easy feat. I want to ease any stress I can for my students, while also ensuring that I provide them with the most rigorous classroom experience possible. I want my students to walk into their college humanities classrooms feeling prepared and capable. "I can and I will" and "Progress over Perfection" are our mantras, and this year, we will definitely put those to use with your help!
Many studies have shown the positive impact that annotating or marking up the text has on a student's ability to comprehend what he or she is reading. My students are about to enter AP Literature, a class in which they must make meaning out of incredibly complex texts, a task with which they will struggle if they cannot comprehend what they read. For this reason, it is imperative that my students have their own books in which they can annotate. Equally important, annotation is a skill that they will use whenever they approach a complex text in college or life. Cementing this skill before they graduate is critical.
While my primary goal is to provide students with the materials they need to be academically successful in this class, I also firmly believe that they deserve to have their own texts.
I want them to start building their own library. I want them to carry their books, and with it their knowledge, wherever they go in life. I want them to have a constant reminder of the skills they developed, the ideas they articulated, and the moments of inspiration they felt when reading. These books can serve as a source of confidence as they enter college humanities classes. Please support my students by donating to this project, as your support will not only serve them in their senior year, but also in college and beyond.
