Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember when you were a freshmen in high school? Could you have succeeded in a college-level AP Human Geography course? Me neither! But these incredible kids can, if they have the right supports and resources. Along with academic empowerment, their cultural awareness will develop every day!

My students attend a public, four-year, comprehensive high school with an enrollment of approximately 3,200 in California.

The student body is 94% Hispanic, 3% White, 1% Black, and 1.2% other. Ninety-three percent of our students will be the first in their families to attend college. We are a school wide Title I institution with very high poverty and English Language Learner populations & 82% of our students receive free/reduced lunch assistance. A large majority of our students are bilingual with 89% designating English as their second language. But my students have committed to taking and passing the AP Human Geography course and the AP Test at the end of the year! They are students who have excelled at the junior high level and qualified for the course. They have worked incredibly hard and are performing really well despite lacking many critical geographic resources needed to get the most value out of this amazing, relevant, and very rigorous course. I'd do anything to help.

My Project

I believe this powerful course is more necessary than ever for our students in this increasingly globalized world. But the vocabulary and concepts can be especially daunting for my students, so I am requesting AP Flash Cards for them to use throughout the year with partners. We have a few boxes already and the kids love them and benefit a lot. We are also trying to develop a class set of Goode's World Atlases, starting with this request for 15. They are beautiful, full color resources that will be shared by partners in class as we try to apply spatial concepts and patterns to actual locations around the world. Finally, AP Human Geo has incredible college and career possibilities and practical applications, and one way to demonstrate this to my students is to develop real world and relevant assignments that incorporate geographic skills, like where to place new parks or train stations in our area. I have ordered two GIS-mapping resources that will help me to design these lessons.

I am constantly amazed at the young students I am surrounded by in my class!

Their maturity, tenacity, and abilities are astounding despite incredible social and economic obstacles they confront on a daily basis, and they inspire and challenge me to be a better teacher every single day. Many of these 9th grade trailblazers are challenging themselves by taking this Advanced Placement class to get an early start on college & professional success. With the right supports, I know they will!
