Our high school was founded in 1957 as a school for the gifted children of New Orleans. The founders had a vision. Inspired by the launch of Sputnik and the space race, an American educational revolution was just beginning. Our school opened ahead of the National Defense Education Act that would put new focus on science and mathematics.
We serve a population of students with high intellectual potential from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds (61% minority).
A vast majority of our students will choose scientific careers. We serve 200 ninth graders and 200 tenth graders as well as 200 eleventh and 12th graders in AP science classes each year: Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Earth Science.
However, our young people also enjoy extra curricular activities, and they are very active with 7-+ clubs.
My Project
Students will be able to test questions they formulate themselves about a part of the energy industry that isn't easily understood by the general public.
Students will decide if BioFuel is a feasible solution to traditional fossil fuels, and what the potential problems and solutions might be.
Inquiry activities are essential for real world problem solving.
Here are some of the activities that will be conducted:
Biomass to Biofuel: Grasses for Ethanol Production kits will be used to allow students to engage in inquiry related to the first step of biofuel production; the dissolved oxygen refill kit will continue to allow me to offer lab extensions; and the micro-pipettes are consumables used in all AP Environmental Science Labs and lab extensions.
These are essential activities to build skills and confidence that students need to be successful in STEM related fields. These are critical skills for college readiness and the workforce. All regions of the country must consider solutions to energy problem and questions posed by this lab activity.
