My Project
As a science educator, I have found it vital to include hands-on lab experiences in my classroom to draw student interest and more importantly increase learning. The supplies I am requesting are for my AP Environmental Science classes and for many of my students it is the only AP course they have taken/and or will take. I am currently teaching at a Title 1 school in which 74% percent of the student population is considered low-income and many speak another language. This adds additional difficulties as students struggle with the content and need more visuals/hands on application to utilize vocabulary and content. These supplies will help teach concepts of Earth's resources and address human impacts on these resources. I have added a quick summary of
Specific Lab Activities include:
Agriculture and Feeding Growing Populations:
Students will learn about different foods, construct a caloric meter, and calculate how much land is needed to grow enough food.
Soil Formation and Properties:
Students will conduct a variety of lab activities that focus on the physical properties of soil texture, size, weathering, and permeability.
Solar Cars:
Students will construct solar cars with the focus being on solar, tilt of panels, location, and practicality of solar. Students will evaluate cars and discuss pros and cons of solar as an energy source.
Nuclear Waste Simulation:
These are all materials for a simulation of containing radioactive waste. (Tin foil, sodium hydroxide, phenolphthalein solution, mason jars)
Chalk Markers:
Are for group work, students will use chalk markers on science lab tables to model and explain scientific concepts. This is a different way for students to participate and explain concepts.
