AP Chemistry Supplies and Equipment

My students need a TI 84 calculator kit for the high level calculations necessary for AP Chemistry. They also need various chemicals and equipment, like hotplates, a balance, tubing and pipettes, to do the inquiry labs.

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

This is the first year for AP chemistry at our school. We lack many of the supplies needed to do the laboratories for this course. In order to make the students experience like college chemistry we hope to upgrade our supplies through this program.

My students are very hard workers so I would like to make their experience more like college chemistry.

The school has many students who have never taken a AP course. I teach chemistry so I hope I can encourage students to take AP chemistry. I hope when they see the support the course has gotten that they will think that this course really matters. Many students do not have the funds to buy graphing calculators that would be supplied by this grant.

My Project

My students will learn about the properties of different classes of molecules through the chemicals I have ordered. Students will learn how to do complex graphs on the calculators I have ordered. Students will learn how to titrate different solutions of hydrogen peroxide and draw inferences as to how pharmaceutical companies test their products using the hydrogen peroxide purchased through Donors Choose. Students will use the Ti84 calculators to do calculations in all laboratories and units particularly in calculations necessary for linear regression when calculating rate constants.

I think the improvements realized through better equipment and more supplies will give the students a real college chemistry experience.

I hope that students will be so interested in these labs that they will consider chemistry as a career.
