Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recently, I have been inspired by a graduation speech I heard from the courageous and wise Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers. She said that the level of a person's education is not dependent on intelligence or ability, but on opportunity. Her words mobilized me- I will do whatever I can to give my students access to high quality and challenging science curriculum, and help them master it.
AP curriculum is often only available to the highest tracked students in well funded schools. I am at neither. I teach at a urban charter school where our classes are mixed and the students are as diverse-academically, economically and culturally- as they come. The kids are amazing and they are doing great things here. Last year 90% of our students graduated, and the majority have gone on to college.
I would like to give my students the opportunity to do college level lab science using AP Chemistry labs. I will make them available as optional labs when they are ready for the challenge. If they work well, I am hoping to redesign my curriculum around the labs, so that all my students can do them.
This project inspires me because I know if I can convince students that they are capable of college level work, their confidence will grow and help them get closer to college. Once they are there, I want them to be leaders who can take off running- especially in science.
Let's try this together. I think this project can help show students that they can do college level science, and they just might discover that they are good at it!
