My Students

My AP Biology students come to class each day ready to push themselves harder in order to achieve their goals of earning college credit in high school and being a contributor in the STEM field. Their enthusiasm for science and lofty goals can only be realized though rigorous lab activities!

My AP Biology students are 11th and 12th graders at a public STEM high school in a large urban district in Washington State.

73% of the students attending the school receive free or reduced lunch and 97% of the students identify as students of color. The high school is an option school, meaning students and their families have made the ambitious leap in their education by selecting to attend a school which may not be their "neighborhood" school. Students enrolled in AP Biology have self-selected into this class. My students have diverse interests and lofty goals for their future. All of them plan to attend a 4-year university and many plan to continue their careers in STEM-related fields. Regardless of their goals, all of my students have big dreams and the ability to achieve great things. They strive to ensure their community is represented in the STEM field. They comprise a group of talented, hardworking individuals who know what they want and are actively working to achieve it.

My Project

Students will use the material requested in several lab investigations required by the College Board. In the ecology units students will carry out investigations on species interactions in ecosystems through the investigation of dissolved oxygen levels and net primary productivity. This in class lab will be paired with the investigation of a local water source to ensure students see real-world connections to their work in the lab. Students will also conduct an animal behavior investigation in this unit. In the evolution unit, students will design and conduct a seven week artificial selection lab using Wisconsin Fast Grow seeds. Because this will occur in the short, dark fall Washington days a grow light is required for this lab. This will be able to be used for years to come by both AP biology and general biology students.

Giving student the opportunity to carry out meaningful lab investigations will make a large difference!

Not only will it ensure that students are better prepared for the AP exam in May, increasing their likelihood of earning college credit, but students will have the opportunity to enhance their science skills. Numerous studies report that high school students are vastly underprepared for the rigor of college level science courses. You can ensure that this talented group is ready!
