Anxiety is Puzzling

My Students

Our resilient students come from a neighborhood that has been hit by drugs, petty crime and unemployment. Despite all of these challenges, they show up as their best selves. Our goal is for the students to leave all of their worries at the door and come into a supportive environment where they can not only learn, but where they feel supported. Our students deserve to feel seen and they thrive when we are able to address their needs.

My Project

There is a lot of research that shows distraction is a helpful technique to redirect anxiety. Students who are in class and unable to focus due to anxiety, will be able to take a puzzle break within the classroom or in my office. The puzzles and brain teasers will give them positive problems to solve, which result in a brain reset. It will give them something to concentrate on other than the negative thoughts or worries that are flooding their minds.

Legitimizing a student's anxiety and giving him or her the tools to cope will not only get the student back into learning mode, but also has a positive effect on the relationship between the students and staff member.

Students who feel seen and validated are in a better position to learn.
