Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students are energetic, hopeful, and full of promise. Our students work hard each day to make the most of their education, but in a school of over 1400 some face challenges that are beyond their control.

A group of student at our school along with faculty support started a closet of personal care products that students can access anonymously so they can attend school comfortable and confident, allowing them to remain focused on academics rather than full of anxiety.

Unfortunately due to lack of access, we have some students who will miss school monthly because they lack supplies to feel clean and confident in school. The need for products is high.

Today the closet is run by a dedicated group of students who volunteer and fill orders from the care closet requests every day. The students created drop boxes around our building where they go to collect submitted request forms. During 3rd period, they go to the closet and fill bags with each of the requests. The orders are then matched to a teacher based on anonymous ID numbers and the students drop off orders to the teacher to give to the receiving student. These requests come from and support our school community.

These same students run yearly collection drives for the closet creating posters and visiting local stores. The original items from our closet came from a donation, but we hope the products from this project will supplement what the students have collected in the drives to help keep this valuable resource available to our wonderful student body. The student group who runs the care closet is really dedicated to this project. These students understand when their peers have the products they need to keep good hygiene, they will be physically well and have mental wellness.
