Antiracism and Me: Understanding Our Past To Change Our World

My Students

I teach 8th grade students in the North Side of Pittsburgh. What I admire most about my students (and there is so much to admire!) is there dedication to, and interest in, social justice reform. Many of our classes often lead to incredible discussions about civil rights and the type of changes they wish to see.

My students have an incredible desire to create a more just and equitable world!

This amazing group of students frequently share stories of their own experiences, creating a strong sense of trust and camaraderie within our classroom. Their ability to lift each other up and help one another succeed goes beyond the walls of the classroom, and into the world around them.

My Project

The books that I am requesting will serve as the backbone for our anti-racist curriculum. This history book is written specifically for young adults to help them understand the devastating toll of racist ideas, but it also proves how social movements of common citizens can change the world. Through analyzing this text, my students will build upon their literary and critical thinking skills, while also empowering them to make the changes they wish to see in this world.

My students have shown a passion for changing the world to be more just and fair. The ideas of antiracism, humanity, and equity shine through this history book. With this book my students will obtain the knowledge to fight for an equitable society, for humanity, and for themselves.
