Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is dedicated to teaching everyone through project-based learning as a social justice educational tool. We are a progressive, public charter school devoted to teaching every child the skills and concepts they need to be successful in our ever-changing world.
We serve a large Mexican American population as well as a diverse group of families in the North County San Diego area.
Our students love to build and have a natural curiosity about the world around them. With a project-based learning approach, we attempt to build an engaging classroom, rich with materials and access to real tools and resources.
We do not receive as much funding as local public schools and do not burden our parents with expenses, therefore we are responsible for our own classroom materials.
My Project
I hope that my library can continue to grow as a place where many peoples' stories are represented and anyone can find a character that they can relate to or learn from. During this pandemic, reading has become a refuge for me and I'm sure for many others. I imagine that, while hopefully returning to school will be exciting, it will also be a challenging change for many students. My hope is that they can find a similar calmness and refuge in a good book while also learning about many different stories.
With the ongoing social justice movement in our world, I am committed to being an anti-racist educator and teaching my students what it means to be anti-racist.
